Brooklyn born artist Raymond Goodbred (b. 1929) was the recipient of a New York City Scholarship to the Art Students League where he studied with Russian painter Robert Brackman. He also studied under realist painter Ogden Pleissner at the National Academy School of Fine Art and would go on to attend New York University’s School of Education. His work can be seen in such public and private collections as the University of North Carolina; The Citadel; Medical University of South Carolina; The Gibbs Art Gallery and the Pentagon, Washington, D.C.

James Ralph Scales (1919-1996) served as 11th President of Wake Forest University between1967-1983. Interested in politics, tennis, literature, history and the arts, under his administration the University opened the Babcock School of Management and the undergraduate School of Business and Accountancy. In 1979, Scales negotiated a new agreement with the Baptist State Convention that granted the University some governing autonomy. Scales Fine Arts Center, housing the departments of Art, Theatre and Music is named in his honor.
