Winston-Salem based artist Anne Kesler Shields (b.1932) has a long affiliation with the University. Known for her many portraits of distinguished members of the Wake Forest community, Shields has had a successful career as a painter of landscapes, urban wall murals and optical art. Additionally, Shields is a donor to the University’s Permanent Collections, recently giving the University her work Samaritian Guests, a group of portraits of Winston-Salem’s homeless. Her work is represented in three of the University’s nine collections.

Lula Leake served as the University’s Dean of Women from 1964-1984, leading students through a significant era of change for women in American history. She would become Assistant VP for Administration and Planning in 1984 and would be awarded the Medallion of Merit in 1996. This award is presented annually to those who have rendered distinguished service to the University.
