In 1991, Philip and Charlotte Hanes made a bequest of their home and art collection to the University. Hanes, the Chairman Emeritus of Hanes Company, Inc, is a longtime supporter of the arts in Winston-Salem. Having studied art in college, he began his collection in 1949 and it has grown to include works by American artists ranging from 18th century portraits to 20th century contemporary art. Outright gifts of three works from this collection have already been made to the University.
